Android 2.1 – v1.8-7 (beta) for your CDMA HTC Hero!
another new years release 
Major thanks to toastcfh, madcoder (aka maejrep), and quietcblongs. Without those guys, this rom wouldn’t exist at all!!
The current build is based on Lox and Behnaam’s GSM 2.1 v1.8.
Works / updates:
- Accelerometer (new to this release)
- Compass (new to this release)
- Espresso-inspired Rosie has been brought in to this rom but turned green from blue because toast hates blue.
- Bluetooth
- Make and receive phone calls
- Texts
- Data (thanks quietcblongs)
- Market (protected apps not showing)
- Identifies properly as Sprint network
- Signal meter
- GPS
Works in test builds (meaning it won’t work from the download publicly available here) :
- Nothing
Doesn’t work :
- Camera
- Visual voicemail
- Multi-touch
How to flash it:
- Boot in to recovery and create a nandroid backup
- Use the menu item “Wipe data/factory reset” (yes, a restore is required)
- Apply it like a normal update.zip — be patient. The first boot will take a while.
- After it finishes booting for the first time, restart it at least once!
All general warnings apply when flashing this rom, just like any other.

once the major features like visual voicemail, camera, and multitouch are fixed, i will probably upgrade as well. I already tried the last 2.1 release, but there were just to many bugs. Definitely excited with how fast your progressing though. Thanks for the hard work!

They are applications that are considered to be “copyright protected”. Whether free or paid doesn’t make a difference. But they are disabled in development roms. It’s not to say we haven’t tried working around that, but all of the normal tricks aren’t working.

I feel like donating when i don’t even have a Hero.
See I’ve been considering switching from my Pre to android and have been watching this ROM closely. Waiting till CES and if nothing impresses then i’ll try making the switch to a Hero, meaning donation for you and all the hardwork.

Hey Flipz, i have some questions.
i have been using the 2.1 on my hero for about 2 days now. and i was just wondering why does a lot of things force close. also on my weather it doesn’t say the correct weather at all.

First off did you do a factory wipe when you installed it? Make sure you do that.
Secondly, it is a beta developer wrong and isn’t meant for daily use.

Your general warnings page state that personal data “should” stay on the device. Mine wiped all data. Can you restore only settings and user data with nandroid? Did anyone else have this same issue?

You lost all data because you are using a beta rom that requires you to wipe data to use it. It got wiped when you went in to nandroid and clicked wipe data.
Nandroid can restore you back to where you were. It won’t restore your data back and keep you on 2.1. Data wipe is required to use this rom.

At this time no. If you are on 2.1 already then no wipe is required. But it doesn’t mean it’s not recommended.

This rom didn’t work at all on my phone. After I unlocked the screen (after 2nd boot) the com.android.phone (or something like that) keep crashing and i wasn’t able to do anything at all. But thats why we have nandroid backups and thats why its a beta.

Ya I did. I was at that “Learn how to use your keyboard” screen, the com.android.phone crashed and it wouldn’t take any input. I had just formated the SD card while I was using fresh 1.1 right before it that makes any difference

Ok I tried again and it worked this time. I don’t know what was done differently but it worked really well. Im gonna drop back down to fresh 1.1 for now because I use the camera a lot and I like the way it looks. Will you be making a “fresh” version of 2.1 after this one is stable?

Absolutely. Once we have a 100% stable 2.1, I’ll be basing fresh off of that. I chose to not do it though until it is absolutely stable, even if that means waiting for the official one.

Flipz- many many thanks for all of your hard work!! I have successfully been running your Fresh rom 1.1 and absolutely love it. I tried out the Eclair 2.1, but there was one thing that didn’t seem to work. If you attempt to send a message, when you start typing some ones name in the to field, it doesn’t pull your contacts. The only way to send a message is to type in the number. Is there anything I am missing or anything that can be done with it?? Again, thanks, I know that its not perfect yet, but was curious about a fix. Take care!! I will be definitely donating to your work very soon!

Now that the 2.1 source is out from HTC, does that make it fairly easy to fill in the holes that are currently missing (camera, light sensor, multitouch)? Or are those not affected by the release? Pardon my ignorance on this.

Flipz – GREAT WORK! I’ve been using Fresh since I got my HERO and I love it. I just wanted to say that, at least on my device, this ROM is noticeably faster/smoother. After about an hour of installing it I got tired of the constant FC and turned off Sense and played with the normal home screen for a while. Do you have an ETA of when you’ll have this ready for every day use?

I did but i’m going to try it again here in a few minutes. I’m running aosp 1.6 with googlebits and it’s running smooth. I’m going to make that my daily and nandroid. The FC I got was with people app. I’ll keep you updated.

Here’s my problem…when I attempt to sync my google contacts with facebook the system is downloading ALL of my facebook friends that have a phone number on their profile. I don’t know the exact number. This is completely overloading the app and it’s FC

It was fun playing with it for sure! I got about a day into it and decided I needed to go back to 1.56. Biggest issue may or may not have anything to do with it, but my BT connects to my A2DP and refuses HFP. Weird. That and like posted up top, FB sync went haywire and show 20 of the same phone numbers in the contact. For some reason, my phone is having a hell of a time going back to 1.56, guessing backup failed. We’ll see.. Thank for the hard work though, and will be keeping an eye out for new stuff!

You just need to install it the same way you flashed fresh rom (flash zip from sdcard via RA’s recovery menu). Then you need to do a factory data wipe (also from RA’s recovery menu).

EXCELLENT! I have been using this for 2 days without any issues until today, still works great but then had to use the internet… um without the multi-touch how do we zoom? The maps has the zoom icon to press but the browser doesn’t. Is there away to turn off the Sense UI or something so that I can use the standard android zoom buttons? Any immediate help would be greatly appreciated since I will need to use the browser while at work on Monday…

Is this ROM being worked on / updated? I love the Fresh 1.1 ROM and am looking forward to upgrading to the Android 2 OS once the Fresh ROM recommends that it is table for non-beta use.
Any idea if/when that may happen?

I have problems with Arabic.
First, Arabic letters appears as squares but I solved the problem by adding fonts.
second, Arabic letters appear as separate letters not normal connected words in the names of files.
third, Arabic text in files is not readable. it is a mix of squares and symbols.
would you help and add Arabic support to this rom. or tell me how to do that.
