Known Issue: Flash Not Working In Browser [1.1] [RESOLVED]
Issue: Flash player will not work in the default browser. Additionally you can not open the gears settings within the browser.
Resolved: After being notified of a bug that was preventing flash player from working within the browser I resolved the issue and released a fix. Just download the update below. You must install this as an update.zip style flash through RA, you can not use the kitchen to do it.

RA is a custom recovery, which is used to install custom roms to the HTC hero. Here is a ton of info on the app:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=596879
If none of that makes sense to you, you should look through that forum and get familiar with what rooting your phone is and how to install custom roms. Good luck

Thanks josue. To expand on that a little more, RA is the “black and green” screen that you see when you are flashing a rom and is made by amon_ra on XDA. It not only allows you to flash a rom but also has a number of other features such as nandroid.
When you install a rom you first copy the zip file to the root of your sdcard. You then boot in to RA (there is a reboot option in the kitchen that will put you in to RA). Then click “flash zip” and pick the zip file. It will ask you to press the home button to confirm that you want to flash it. That same process is also done for this patch, and any other tweak that says it is “update.zip compatible.”

Shameless plug: http://babbledroid.blogspot.com
I’m doing a sort of blog-”column” on Android hacking and rooting etc. My next topic (due out within a day or two) is recovery images (like RA.)

I have used the latest RA recovery to root the phone, and flashed the latest version of Fresh ROM…..How do I flash this update through RA? I read the previously suggested link from josue85, but still not exactly sure. New to this as well. If its not too much trouble, can someone post the process and also a description of what exactly is taking place so that I can learn not just how to do this, but also what exactly I am doing….again, only if it is not too much trouble.. Thanks guys

See the comments above to help explain RA a little bit and how to flash this patch through it. And for a little bit more details… you don’t root a phone with RA. Rooting is what gives you full read/write access to the file system, which is what allows you to be able to install RA.
As for what’s actually taking place, an “update.zip” style update has a script in it that RA reads and follows. It will consist of things like deleting files, moving files, copying files, changing file permissions, etc.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to explain this a little more clearly. FOr anyone else who is struggling like I was all you do it… (1) add this zip file to the root directory of your SD card (2) boot into recovery [hold HOME and turn on device] (3) select ‘flash zip from SD card’ (4) once complete, select reboot now from the menu. That easy. Thanks again for your help. Hope my “dumbed down” description can help a fellow newby =)

Don’t forget that your step 2 can be done through the pre-kitchen by going in to tools and clicking shutdown. You will then have the option to reboot in to recovery rather than having to power your phone off and press certain buttons.

Crap I meant to put a note in there that it would clear your bookmarks. Sorry about that. Although the ones it includes are the stock ones. It’s a clean copy of the apk from the MR. Unless Sprint injects different bookmarks as part of the setup / customization. But all this patch does is clear the browser from /data/data/ and then puts a new copy of it on.

Gotcha. No worries. I visit the sites enough that they were easy to recreate and delete the ones I don’t want.

Does this mean the browser is no longer zipaligned/optimized?
I’m assuming you decided to go back to the stock apk.

It is still zipaligned but the png’s are not optimized. I checked back to 1.0 and it had the same issue. I can’t believe it went so long without anyone noticing.
So I wanted to put this out there as a fix while I looked in to the issue for the next release.

I tried to install this as an update.zip using RA, but it said that no such file exists. When I choose “Apply sdcard:choose zip”, it shows the fix. Is running it this way the same?

Yes. The “update.zip” option only works if you have actually renamed it to update.zip. Using “choose zip” would be the proper way to go.
Additionally the fact that you have those two options shows you are using RA 1.2.3, you should upgrade to 1.5.2. You can use the auto-rooter in the kitchen to do it (even though you are already rooted it will still work).

I knew i installed the auto-rooter patch for a reason.
Loving the kitchen, and 1.1. Great work on both.

Can you tell me what site you are going to that flash isn’t working on? This is a confirmed working fix so it must be something more specific for you.

No flash here either. I applied via “Apply sdcard:chose zip”. I then hit the HTC site from stock browser and I have a flash icon with an exclamation over it.

That’s generally telling you that you don’t have the newest flash. The newest mobile version that we have is 9.x whereas the desktop version is 10.x. You are seeing a security warning telling you to upgrade, even though we don’t have an upgrade available.
Go to the flash player test on your phone. You should see the same exclamation point but if you go to the top right you will see that it says you have 9.x installed. That means it’s installed and working. http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

I installed fresh 1.1 today and my flash still works. I did not have to apply the fix. Does the latest version of fresh have the fix built in?

No, it doesn’t. However it is possible that some data remained behind from your last rom when you installed fresh, which is causing it to work.

flipz thanx for all your hard work! my flash didnt work before rooting, installing fresh, etc so i installed the patch as well. i too keep getting the flash icon with the exclamation (on th HTC home page for ex.) how do i “Go to the flash player test on your phone” in order to make sure i did it right and its simply a version issue?
thanks!

The exclamation point is flash’s warning that you are using an older version. Our phones only have 9.x even though 10.x is out. The fact that you are seeing the exclamation point actually shows that it is working because it detects you have an old one. Nothing we can do to update right now because it’s the only one available for us.

Flash in the browser is fixed with this update… the only limitation is that we still only have Flash v9 on ours.

That is the warning from flash that you are using version 9.x but again… that’s our only option. That proves that it’s working though because it’s detecting your version.
