Known Issue: Auto-Rooter Fails in Kitchen [0.2] [RESOLVED]
Thanks to Diplomat2387 showing me his error log I was able to find a bug in the auto-rooter that is preventing it from working. I have created a fix and he tested it and confirmed it’s working now. This download is only needed if you plan to use the auto-rooter! Otherwise 0.2 should be working fine for you. This is only a patch and you must also have 0.2 downloaded to use the kitchen.
- Close any copies of the kitchen that you have open
- Download the update below to your kitchen folder, REPLACING the exe that was already there
- That’s it

Ok, I went to root my Hero tonight (just got the phone today) and since I have a “With google” phone I did the checkbox, rooted it, rebooted and then unchecked the box. I then got the following, any clue if the process was successful the second time?

The memory errors just happen sometimes when flashing RA and are completely separate from the kitchen. The root itself was 100% successful but during the flashing of the recovery image it goes those errors. About half the time when you get those it worked just fine, and other times it didn’t. I would honestly just reboot your phone and run the auto-rooter again until you don’t see the out of memory errors.
ok, did that and i still can’t use your tool to remove the sprint apps i don’t want.
Can you tell me what happens? Give me error codes? What apps did you try to remove and what the result was? Are you using fresh rom? What are your results from the diagnostic test under the help menu in the kitchen?
Help me to help you.
I am trying to remove Footprints, Nascar, NFL & Stocks. Not using a fresh rom, should I be? No error codes (of course) and the diagnostic test showed no issues. I actually ran it on my fiance’s computer since my Windows 7 one has a java one no matter what I do.
If you are using the stock rom (even rooted) then “remount” should be failing, which would also prevent you from removing apps. But yes, this is designed for use with fresh.
then i’ll load a fresh on it once i am done w/ sprint (damn curve 8330 on my fiance’s line is fubar).
is 1.1 your newest fresh rom?
lol. good luck with sprint.
yes, 1.1 is the newest one. it was released on new years. make sure to not use the kitchen to flash that. you need to flash a rom through the recovery menu.
You check check out the very simplified steps here: http://geekfor.me/faq/general/ under “how to use it”.
Ok, if I ever get off hold I will do this (so probably tomorrow). I am also wondering if its possible to add the Amazon MP3 app back in since I’m not seeing it in your pre-kitchen 0.2
about 2 months ago
You’re right, I had actually never added that back. I can make you an update for it though. Let me know once you get everything working.
Ok, I will do that. I just like the idea of being able to buy music right from my phone again if I decide I want to. It definately looks like tonight is a bust for flashing the fresh rom though. Been on hold for over 20 minutes now, I think the department they tried to transfer me to is closed
about 2 months ago
Finally got time to do this. I’m working on flashing the Fresh 1.1 ROM right now. I want to make sure I understand right though, it will wipe everything out and I’ll have to add in the stuff I want. Right? I know you removed the auto update for the default HTC weather/clock widget, but the widget is still there right? If not, where does one find it?
Just wondering about that update, running your Fresh 1.1 ROM so far and loving it, just wish I had the music store in case I want to buy some

That is where your error is. Troubleshooting steps:
1) Turn ON USB debugging. system < applications < development
2) Once USB debugging is turned on check device manager in windows to make sure you have no missing drivers
3) Reboot your computer, unplug and plug your phone back in.
4) Try a different USB cable
Right now ADB isn’t recognizing your phone so one of the above will fix your problem. Start at 1 and work your way down.

Debugging is on. not sure how to do device manager step and check for divers sorry hopefully you can help. and if it is the usb then i will have to get another cable.. sometimes when i do the diaginist i get everything good and then sometimes i get a remont and sendkeys error and the sometimes the remount error . please help
about 2 months ago
With USB debugging turned on and your phone plugged in to your computer
1) Hold the windows key and hit the letter R — this will be up a run prompt
2) Type in devmgmt.msc and hit enter
3) Look for any missing drivers. Notably one called adb

Your error is there. Rooting actually works 100% but then it can’t find the recovery image on your sdcard. By chance are you trying to do this with your sdcard mounted to your computer? Because it shouldn’t be. Just plug it in and go. There are a couple things to try:
1) Make sure you don’t mount your sdcard when you plug it in to your computer
2) Try unchecking the “i have a google phone” option and allowing it to flash the newer RA. It won’t break anything, it just may still not work.
3) If that fails then copy/paste me the following file: c:\folder-with-kitchen\adb\root-debug.txt
about 1 month ago
everything is working thanks for all the help. im rooted flashed the fresh and the stocks are bye bye. thanks again
about 2 months ago
Important to note, the line that generates the recovery image from RA fails (out of memory) if too many apps are running.
Task killed all apps (mail, handcent, etc) and recovery image got created.
Recommend that people unload, uninstall or otherwise prevent un-needed apps from running during the rooting process. (automated)
I’ll know more shortly as Fresh appears to be loading…
about 2 months ago
It was likely only a coincidence as the RA can give out of memory errors even after a clean boot. It actually deals more so with the amount of space that the recovery partition is given from my understanding. In general flashing it again won’t result in the errors.

just wanted to thank you so much for all your amazing work. i had been trying for months to root my hero, and NOTHING would work. I followed every guide I could find. Finally this update allowed me to finally root my sprint hero and now i’m finally running fresh 1.1 thanks again

Thx. It worked but now I tried to remove the sprint apps but they didn’t remove thank you do much for your. Also how do o know that it worked I was able to do nadroid backup do o believe that I am n ow rooted.
Can you tell me what apps you tried to remove? What rom are you running? Were there any errors? If you can get in to RA (the black and green screen where nandroid runs) then you have root. It can’t be installed without it.

Thx. I think I got the root done I was able to do a android backup but true to delete some of the Sprint apps but they didst remove. Thanks for help.

Hey Flipz, when I run your diagnostic test in help. I get everything checked besides the sendkeys option. Autoroot will not be successful unless that feature is checked right?
Thanks

Correct. There is no work-around for that other than using a different computer or rooting it manually. The kitchen will work fine for you once you are rooted.

if not could you help me manualy root it.
cuz i had it rooted but i had to Use: ruu so i could ship it to sprint. could you help mee manualy root it??

It works perfectly fine on Windows 7. Just use the “diagnostic” test under the help menu and make sure everything passes. If java fails that’s ok for rooting purposes.

Never Mine I figured out what i was doing wrong with the recovery img 1.5.2.
i made a vid on it but i wasnt typeing /sdcard/recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img
before i did anything on flashrec then i did all the other stuff and everything worked fine. later on i will post my vid and show you what i was doing wrong, maybe it could help other people that are having problems

Let me know, I’d like to check it out. Although flashrec has nothing to do with the auto-rooter.

having a problem with the kitchen it is giving me an error it cant find my as2root… i know its there. i rooted my phone with the 1.2.3 a while back and its a google branded phone and now i cant get this to work to update my home power screen
any ideas?
Asroot2 missing is ok if you aren’t trying to root. Although it shouldn’t be missing. The kitchen checks in c:\folder-with-kitchen\root\asroot2 for that file. If it can’t find it then it sounds like your folder structure is messed up or it got deleted/corrupted.

its there and its still workin so thats why i dont understand whats going on

any updates on the auto root not working on windows 7 ? I also tried to run it on xp but getting the error “not able to push files properly” and error code:

any help appreciated, wanna root sooo bad !
The rooter does work perfectly fine on win 7 except for some rare cases. Based off a suggestion from abcdfv I actually did find a way to make it more consistent and to fix it for those rare cases. I wasn’t planning on releasing a fix though until the new kitchen came out but that will be a while. Why don’t you use the contact form above and email me. I’ll send you a test version.
Also tell me why the auto-rooter wasn’t working for you. What was it doing? Because it is 100% working on 7 except those rare cases have sendkeys issues.

That shows that your sendkeys is working perfectly fine, it is actually failing when it tries to write your RA recovery image and can’t find it on your sdcard which shows that the original error still exists… it didn’t push them properly. You can try just copying RA from the ./rooting/ directory in the kitchen to the root directory of your sdcard and then try again.

Every command is working except for the 1st two for some reason. The new version of the kitchen that will be coming out this week (hopefully) will use powershell instead of cmd which is much more accurate and will prevent that problem. cmd just has weird issues sometimes since it’s an emulator talking to an emulator.

Okay, thanks I’ll wait for the new version

So come to think of it, I completely forgot that your error is the reason I had to release a patch.

That should work for you.

I’m trying this autoroot and when i check the have google phone. When it goes to try and run the scripts from the command line I get these

So looks like some commands are not getting there. Nothing else has focus.
I’ve tried to do it with the check box off and it tries to run the shell command…it never takes then throws errors when everything else is run. What am i doing wrong?

Yea you are suffering from a cmd issue that sometimes happens in windows 7. Basically it’s a side effect of using a dos emulator that talks to a linux emulator. I have a fix for it in the new auto rooter. Sorry to say you’ll just have to be patient. I’m working diligently to get it finished!

You are not using the patched version. A bug was released for the auto-rooter shortly after 0.2 was released. Please download the patch and use that, it will fix your issue.
In fact, you even posted this comment in the post that talks about the error and to download the fix lol.

Is this is Sprint Hero? Because your error messages would indicate it’s not.
That shows that the asroot2/rooting process was killed which leads me to believe you don’t have a Sprint phone.
It is a CellularSouth Hero…was hoping it would work ’cause it is CDMA and when I was messing with their WinMo products, I could do so using Sprint-style updates.
Apparently not!

That part right there shows that you definitely aren’t using the patched one. The bug was that I left out a couple of enter strokes after the first 3 commands. And that’s what yours is doing.
I just downloaded fresh and the patch…when i run the program I’m getting a application error…it’s saying “The application failed to initialize properly (0xc000135). Click on OK to terminate the application.” I dunno what is wrong…can you help me please.

It requires the .net framework so you are either missing it, or yours is corrupted. Check windows updates.

Flipz man frustrated here, been trying for DAYS to get the autorooter to work. Installed HTC Synch, Android SDK and Kitchen and rooter fix and no matter what i do i keep getting failed to push properly try rebooting. Have rebooted a million times, nothing works. Any help would be appreciated. Also running windows XP home, USB debugging is ON, not mounted SD card.
So the new htc sync’s adb doesn’t report a new version number, however the md5 checksum doesn’t match previous versions. It’s the exact issue that the 1.56 RUU fails for some people with USB errors. Make sure you are not mounting your usb, make sure you are not starting htc sync. You may even have to go as far as uninstalling sync and rebooting your computer before trying again. Other than that, all I can say is wait for the new version of the kitchen. The rooter is updated and has better error handling.

I get the same error that Will and Argh are getting.

Got it, I loaded the recovery image on the SD card, uninstalled HTC Synch and BAM it works!
Yea yours was failing to copy RA to your sdcard so when it went to install it, it wasn’t there. It was likely caused by sync. Glad you got it going!

So I tried to do the autoroot, and this is what I got;

Nothing, you are suffering from the crappy cmd emulator built in to windows 7. The new kitchen (when released) fixes the issue by using powershell instead.
