Update 03/09/10:
Thanks to some of damageless’ handy work in this thread, we now have a working 2.1 that has still camera, video camera, and protected apps visible in the market. He did this by using the framework and apps from the Eris dump, and the kernel and drivers from fresh 2.0b and voila, everything worked. I decided to do the same thing using the Eris release that toast and I put out. However I have decided to not completely replease Fresh 2.0b just yet for three reasons. First is because Fresh 2.0b is technically a newer build. It has newer frameworks and newer apk’s, however they had to be replaced with the Eris ones to make everything work. Second is because I am certain we are getting our official update soon, and that will make all of this obsolete. And third is because I am going out of town in a couple hours and will be gone for 5 days. If there are bugs or problems in this version then I don’t want to take 2.0b away from people because I won’t be able to fix them! So if you want protected apps + video + everything already included in 2.0b (excluding wired tether and live wallpapers. LWP only kind of worked and kept crashing so I removed them) then grab 2.0b2. If you want the latest and greatest from HTC then grab 2.0b.

I will also spread the word that it seems a fix for the sign out issue is to put your gmail account in to the mail application. That actually could explain why I have never seen the issue.

Go to the download page for 2.0b to get the download link and more info on this rom.

A radio update is flashed the same way that an update.zip is flashed, however the process goes a little different once you start it. I made a little walk through for everyone out there so that they feel more comfortable doing it. These screen shots are while using RA 1.6.2… in blue.

1) Copy the radio.zip to the root of your sdcard, however you please.

2) Boot in to RA and pick “Flash zip from sdcard”

3. Pick your zip off the list and then hit the Home button to tell it to flash.

4. When it finishes running it will tell you to restart your phone. Just pick “restart” off the top of the menu.

5. After you click reboot it will say “writing radio image”. Your phone will then reboot to a picture of a phone coming out of a box. It will stay there for about 30 seconds, just leave it. Your phone will then reboot again and it will load in to RA.

6. After it boots in to RA it will say “formatting cache…” and will show a status bar for a few seconds. The phone is done as soon as the status bar goes away. Just click reboot and you’re done.

7. After your phone boots up, check Menu < Settings < About Phone < Software Information < Baseband Version to confirm it flashed. The stock version for our phones is 1.04.01.09.21.

I'm working on getting to the bottom of it.

Fresh Rom 2.x FAQ

Does this have apps2sd?

It currently does not because I wasn't able to fully test it.

Can I use Fresh Pre-Kitchen 0.2 on this rom?

Overall the answer is no. Some functions (like the toolbox) will work. However you do not want to push any roms / themes / applications to this build because you will break it. They aren't made for 2.1. :) Once this project has stabilized a little bit I'll be hammering away at the kitchen.

How do I use the live wallpapers (lwp)?

Live wallpapers started on the nexus and they are made for vanilla android, not for sense. For that reason if you want to use them, you need to stop using sense. You can do that one of two ways.
1) Completely remove SenseUI (Rosie.apk) from /system/app/Rosie.apk . If you do that and reboot then the phone will default to Android Home. Then just change your wallpaper to a live one.

2) The other option (which you can see me doing in the video) is using both. You can do that by doing:
Menu < Settings < Applications < Manage Applications < HTC Sense < Clear Defaults
Now when you hit the Home button it will ask you if you want to use Home or HTC Sense. As long as you don't check "use by default" then it will ask you every time you hit Home. If you prefer it to go to Home or Rosie every time then just check that and pick which one you want.

How well do live wallpapers work?

Many of them work really well. They aren't really made for our phones so some run a little slow. Additionally any that require OpenGL 2 won't work. But there are a lot of free ones on the market that work great. I have included a few with the rom. Keep in mind that these aren't made for our phones so it may not be 100% stable. :)

What are protected apps / how can I get them?

Protected apps are applications on the market that are considered copy protected. Probably the most popular one that people ask about is twidroid. With a developer rom like this you can not see protected apps. Now that doesn't mean you aren't able to use them. If you have purchased any apps or there are any apps that you want that are protected then you need to download them from another rom and then back them up. Once you back it up you will have the .apk that you can then install on this rom.

Android 2.1 – v2 (beta) for your CDMA HTC Hero!

Why another build? And why back to 2.1?

We were ecstatic last night when the Eris 2.1 release got leaked. We had hoped it would help us get camera and mms working (it hasn’t) however it did give us a MUCH smoother build and cleaner base to build off of. “Out of the box” almost nothing was working. Luckily toast was quick to be able to adapt the current fixes we had in the other rom to this one. I then took it and cleaned it up a bit. We’re happy to release this because while it still isn’t a daily rom for most users, I think you’ll amazed at how smooth this build runs.

Keep in mind that this is still a beta/development rom. It is not meant as a daily rom and does have bugs.

Major thanks to toastcfh (donate to him) because without him this rom wouldn’t be where it is.

Honorable mention to: madcoder (aka maejrep), and quietcblongs for their continued help

This rom is based on the leaked HTC Eris 2.1 rom for Verizon.

Android 2.0.1 – v1.9.3 (beta) for your CDMA HTC Hero!

Why 2.0.1 when it used to be called 2.1? When this build started it was based off of a leaked rom that was thought to be 2.1… before flan/nexus one were official. Now that it’s real and newer roms have come out we know that it is 2.0.1, not 2.1. So it’s the same build that you guys have had from us, just with the proper name now.

Keep in mind that this is still a beta/development rom. It is not meant as a daily rom and does have bugs.

Major thanks to toastcfh (donate to him) because without him this rom wouldn’t be where it is.

This rom is based on Lox and Behnaam’s GSM 2.0.1.

Hey all. So as you may know, I have publicly spoken out against devs charging (aka requiring a donation) to gain access to downloads. I have graciously accepted donations from anyone willing, but I would never force anyone to pay. You may also know that I used to have an adsense account that Google canceled because too many people were clicking the links. I take that as a sign that people are willing to help support fresh rom/kitchen, even if they can’t afford to donate. So with that, I have been looking at other ways for people to support my projects without necessarily having to pay, and I think I came up with one. However I wanted to get everyones input before I put it in to action.

Never mind on the whole survey thing guys. I appreciate all the input however I found a flaw in the survey site. They are totally legit and a good company however I just spoke to their support team and it turns out if the survey doesn’t get accepted (like if false info was put in) then I don’t get paid and the content doesn’t get unlocked. I am completely fine if I don’t get paid from every survey however it is unacceptable to me that you guys might go through a whole survey and not even get access to the download. So this idea is out the window. I care more about you guys getting the content than me getting any money.

There are multiple companies out there that will pay you in exchange for people taking a quiz on your website, and some of these are specifically designed around you allowing to protect your downloads. Basically what I can do is have it setup so that when I have a new release you must take a quiz in order to gain access to the download. Now these are dumb little quizzes like what simpsons character are you or things like that. Then at the end of it, while it is “calculating your results” it will show you a number of offers that you can either accept or deny. Once you get through the offers (when I tested one out there were 10 of them) it will show you the results of your quiz. At that point I earn a small amount of money (usually under $1) and you are granted access to the download. It costs you nothing, takes only a few minutes of your time, and you can use a spam or throw away email when you fill out the quiz. It also allows me to setup a thing where you can bypass the quiz in exchange for a paypal donation if you so chose. So with that… I present you a poll. Please weigh in and feel free to leave comments on what you think.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

I have decided to include a link to a quiz below to show you guys what they are like. If you take the quiz all the way to the end to where it shows you the results then it has earned me a small amount of money and you have officially supported fresh without costing you anything but a few minutes of your time. At the end of the quiz it will gain you access to some screen shots of the new (unreleased) kitchen. I know that’s not anything special… but I have to give you some type of media to unlock. You all know that I have pretty much always gone the way that the majority wanted… so I’m hoping that majority is ok with the quizzes. Thanks!

Take the survey

Update: I just took a survey and the “live stats” on their site didn’t report that it was even taken. They were supposedly a very legitimate company so it may be something with my setup. I have disabled the survey for now so that you guys don’t waste your time. But still vote on the poll or comment please.

I am a long time user of twitter on a personal level, but I don’t tweet about android stuff on there. Ever since I started this site I have debated on creating a twitter account. Up til now I had decided not to because I had too many other things to keep up with already however due to multiple requests I have decided to bite the bullet and go for it. I will not be using that account for support requests so you still need to bring your questions here, however I will update with smaller updates that aren’t blog-worthy.

I put an updated pic of the kitchen up there, just for the twitter fans. Check it out now!
