How To: Flash a Radio Update
A radio update is flashed the same way that an update.zip is flashed, however the process goes a little different once you start it. I made a little walk through for everyone out there so that they feel more comfortable doing it. These screen shots are while using RA 1.6.2… in blue.
These instructions were made on the HTC Hero but works the same on other phones.
1) Copy the radio.zip to the root of your sdcard, however you please.
2) Boot in to RA and pick “Flash zip from sdcard”
3. Pick your zip off the list and then hit the button to tell it to flash.
4. When it finishes running it will tell you to restart your phone. Just pick “restart” off the top of the menu.
5. After you click reboot it will say “writing radio image”. Your phone will then reboot to a picture of a phone coming out of a box. It will stay there for about 30 seconds, just leave it. Your phone will then reboot again and it will load in to RA.
6. After it boots in to RA it will say “formatting cache…” and will show a status bar for a few seconds. The phone is done as soon as the status bar goes away. Just click reboot and you’re done.
7. After your phone boots up, check Menu < Settings < About Phone < Software Information < Baseband Version to confirm it flashed. The stock version for our phones is 1.04.01.09.21.

Well I did it, and everything worked like a charm!
I first upgraded my recovery image to 1.6.2, I was using 1.5.2, just to be using the exact same version as Flipz, although I prefer green
. Upgrading my radio is not something I would be doing often, but I’m having a lot of problem with my phone switching between 1x and Ev at work, so I decided to try this, I can’t tell yet if there is any different, but I though it was worth trying. Thanks for your hard work!.

Why not upgrade if you have the chance? I 1.6.2 has better menus and a few Carebear versions (lol). Don’t see any reason not to get the new version.
BTW, just did something that might have been stupid and flashed this on a 1.5 Stock ROM. So far though, I don’t see anything wrong. Just finished first boot.

If you attempt to update your radio, be absolutely certain that you are using the correct version (there is an EU version that is different from the non-EU version).
Flashing my HTC Hero with the wrong radio (I accidentally used the EU version) has bricked my phone, as described by Griff in post #3.
The phone won’t even power-on, and plugging it in does not charge it (the charging light never comes on).
Oh well. Sprint’s own Android 2.1 update bricked my USB data port on the phone, and now it’s finally been finished-off. Guess I’ll look for an EVO on ebay.

This worked like a charm on my rooted evo using Rom Manager to start the flash from SD Card. Didnt see all that you saw, it used ClockWorkMod and all i saw was the box with the arrow pointing to the little android.. then it started and i had the correct radio installed. Thanks for the help.
Not to advertise, but if people are having issues, the $5 for Rom Manager Pro is SO worth it…

Thanks for this Flipz. It’s always a little scary flashing a radio. Turning me on to the blue RA w/pouty-bear helped ease my fears though. Oh yeah, your steps helped too!
